Now these are suggestions more than set rules about playing in a Forum. Since we can't game together as much as I'd like personally as a Kin, I thought this would be an awesome solution to get our IC fix!
~Personally I don't care what character you play in a thread. You can use your main, an alt, or a brand-new character that you develop as you go. I may play Mae and Colts in a single thread but it will be very tricky to keep them separated. If you're new to this type of RP, stick to one character in the beginning.
~Jump in with your character and have fun! When I start a thread I have a basic setting and a vague idea for a story, which is just enough to build on, I hope, and allow for people to have some freedom. So feel free to take the story in whatever direction you choose inside the boundaries of Tolkien's Lore and without God-Modding, which leads me to...
~God-Modding is the number one no-no for RP of this kind. You can interact with other characters inside the story, but you don't put words in their mouths or make them take actions. The whole point is to see what the other players will do!
For example:
Maewynne's post:
Maewynne glanced around the Prancing Pony, her fingers barely strumming the strings of her harp. A warm summer breeze blew in the door as a dark figure slipped inside, barely concealed in the dim light.
Tormac's post:
Tormac dragged himself into the Pony, his feet sore from many days of traveling with no rest. He scanned the dim room, spotting Maewynne, his Minstrel friend, standing by the fire.
"Mae govannen, Maewynne! What brings you here?" Tormac asked, brushing off his cloak.
Maewynne's post:
Maewynne smiled brightly at Tormac. "I'm looking for a bit of rest. My road has brought me to many strange places, but here is my place of peace. You haven't happened to see a lady in a red cloak about, have you?"
And so forth. Note that I'm not making Tormac say or do anything, merely bringing the story forward and adding to the plot in small ways people can work with. Larger action and bolder scenes are great, but never Mod what other people are doing!
An incorrect post:
Tormac's post:
Tormac happily toasted Coltsfoot with a flagon of mead, the firelight dancing in his weary eyes.
"Cheers to you, fellow Hobbit!" he said as he downed his drink.
Coltsfoot's post:
Coltsfoot knocked the empty cup from Tormac's hand. She glared at him, daring him to say more.
Tormac gasped and frowned at Coltsfoot. "Why did you do that?"
So make sure you don't interfere with others' posts. You are only reporting what your character sees and does and how they react to others.
Also, try to avoid adding details about another character as well, unless it's in the form of your character's inside thoughts or repeating something already said in the post. Even if you "know" the character from playing already, don't insert something you don't know is there.
~Stay IC. If you have a comment OOC, use brackets at the start of your post like in /chat. If you have questions about the story, details, or the character, that's a great way to ask them.
~Don't try to make the thread hard to post on for other players. Try to leave an opening for others to join in or respond. There's nothing more aggravating than trying to participate in a story when there's no "window" for play.
~Most of all, have a good time and be creative! Your posts don't have to be elaborate or long to perpetuate a great story that can be loads of fun for others to play in!
~Here are some links to sites I used to play on as Coltsfoot. I haven't posted in a while but on both I played with some very talented RPers who are great at what they do, including our very own Finnbarr! He's the admin and the co-admin on both, respectively.
