Maewynne is in her study at the Kin house. Dolen stops in to give her a report on what he's discovered about the mysterious Man they're hunting.
Maewynne glances up from the scroll she's been reading and nods to Dolen.
Dolen pokes his head in the doorway, apparently uncertain if anyone is home at all. He returns the nod and steps inside. His boots trail muddy footprints across the exquisite floor and he still wears the gifts of the wild in his leathers. He places one end of the bow on the ground beside him and leans on the tall shaft, watching Maewynne cautiously. "Evening."
Maewynne returns to studying the crumbling piece of parchment, not sparing the tracks he's left a second glance. "Aye, evening." She sighs softly as she rolls the scroll delicately and ties it securely with a bit of string. She glances at Dolen as she settles it in a stack of books and papers by her chair, then looks into the fire.
Dolen eyes the stack of books and parchment curiously, moving further into the room. "Looking for something in particular?"
Maewynne shakes her head, then rethinks this and nods slowly. "Aye, I'm looking for more information on the terrain of Evendim. In case I have to travel on roads I haven't yet seen there."
Dolen nods, "On that note, perhaps I can give you a bit more of a definite region to study."
Maewynne restrains her tone of voice, hoping to control any emotion. "Aye?"
Dolen says, 'I've found the man's trail. Was easy enough, and he had left behind rear guards. They're the ones that gave up his trail, in fact.'
Maewynne says, 'What do you mean?'
Dolen says, 'Two men on the trail leading towards Evendim from Trestlebridge. They were fond of dicing, and ale. *he shrugs*'
Maewynne says, 'But Anormorn found his tracks leading to Oatbarton. Does this mean both ways I know of are watched?'
Dolen nods, "Watched, but not guarded. Those two were the only eyes set on that path, not meant to impede anyone at all. Just a watch on the look out for someone of your description. They didn't even know who they worked for beyond a description.'
Maewynne says, 'My... description?'
Dolen nods.
Maewynne blinks, shocked. "But... I thought this Man wouldn't spare me a second thought, or so you said the last we talked."
Dolen says, 'Aye, I said that he -shouldn't-. That he is makes it that much more dangerous, aye?'
Maewynne nods, trying to contain her dark look. "Why is he looking for me?"
Dolen considers for a long moment, "Perhaps...he feels slighted and has other plans besides some simple retaliation?"
Maewynne looks to him, her eyes wide. "I don't understand."
Dolen says, 'Well, he is injured and clearly needs to get somewhere more remote, aye? Perhaps he wants to draw you out to a place he can control the situation?"'
Maewynne shakes her head, at a loss. "Why would he... Are you sure?"
Dolen says, 'Sure? Not at all. That's just my guess, I can't say why else he would do such a thing. Unless he knows you have what resources you do at your disposal.'
Maewynne knots her hands in her lap, glaring at the floor. "I don't know how this Man could have discovered this unless he has a spy of sorts."
Dolen says, 'You're not exactly a mystery about town, lass. People know you and they see who you walk with.'
Maewynne says 'And sir, my resources are very limited. I have a band of friends who would fall for me if I so wished it. But I don't. So really, he overestimates me if this is his plan.' She tilts her head to the side. "Who I walk with?"
Dolen says, 'Aye. Myself, Kedwyr, Phaerel. You're a person of some importance.'
Maewynne looks baffled. "I'm not anyone of any importance, sir. Or rather, I don't wish to be or work towards that. Now I wish I was a person of less reputation." She sighs slowly and stares down at the floor.
Dolen shakes his head, "What I mean is, most people have few friends that matter. Good folk perhaps, but farmers, bakers... the sort that isn't a danger. I'm certain he has eyes in the city, a man like that. So he's seen you walk with people who would care if you went missing.'
Maewynne says, 'Aye, they do care very much about my wellfare. Which is why I must work towards my goal as quietly as I can, so that the fewest of my companions will be in danger. And these friendships, they may lead him to want to stop me? Or.. find me?'
Dolen says, 'No no, they keep you safe, in a way. Like I said yesterday, if you were anyone else, he'd as soon just have you murdered in the streets and be done with it. Your companions stay his hand.'
Maewynne takes a deep breath, her face for once going pale. "He fears my friends and what they may do?"
Dolen nods.
Maewynne chews her lower lip and stares into the fire. 'So you think that perhaps I should give up on my chase of this Man?'
Dolen eyes her, "Why would you do that now? You were quite set on tracking him down earlier."
Maewynne says, 'Because what saves me is my companions. What if he decides to remove them as my protectors? I cannot send people into harm's way. I should do this myself, I think.'
Dolen says, 'I've not heard you send anyone in. I believe they all would volunteer for that task.'
Maewynne nods, clearly worried and very confused. "I will not send a single one of my friends where they may be harmed without me checking the circumstances first. I've told you that I'm a traveler. And that is why. Because all paths take a similar direction in these days. And I wish to smooth is as much as I can, to appraise all the dangers and comforts along the way, for my companions."
Dolen says, 'Aye, you are a good person for that, but what good would you be doing them if you scout the way first and end up at the end of a spear?'
Maewynne smiles softly. "I'd blunt that spear for them, sir. What path do you suggest now? As the leader of my hunt.'
Dolen says, 'You'd blunt the spear? You're a hard woman, but not that hard. I suggest you rally your company and lead all of them on the path North through the Fields of Fornost to Evendim."'
Maewynne nods slowly, weighing this in equal measure with her own thoughts. "Fornost is a hard path, but faster than any I know. I will scout ahead."
Dolen says, 'Following his trail directly would be foolish as well, he certainly would expect that. You will scout ahead, alone?'
Maewynne glances up to him quickly and then to the floor. "Aye, and I wish for you to respect that. And share your knowledge of my plans with no one until I can appraise what lies ahead."
Dolen frowns, "As you like, I suppose. I'll tell you right now it's a fool move, but I wont stop you. Wandering about fields of dead men, guards set to watch for specifically you... Bad idea to go alone, it is.'
Maewynne looks to Dolen with dark eyes. Her face is creased with weariness and worry. "What do you suggest then?"
Dolen says, 'As I said, I can give you the location you can find the man. Gather your friends and set out together. That way, if one of you is injured it is due to luck rather than foolishness.'
Maewynne thinks for a long while about this and sighs gently. "I cannot choose at the moment which course will harm the least and cause the most good."
Dolen nods, "Think on it. And when you do, be sure to remember your life has weight as well. I'll leave you to your thoughts then, unless you've a question.'
Maewynne blinks, shocked at this. She shakes her head and nods to him farewell silently.
Dolen inclines his head in a silent farewell and turns to take his leave, thick cloak swirling about his ankles.
