Ok, every now and again, someone brings up voice chat, and in particular Ventrilo. Now, I've stayed quiet on this, because I'm hard of hearing, so while voice chat is doable for me, I do often have a hard time understanding what's being said, because there are no lips for me to read. But I think I might as well get my piece in here.
Why Ventrillo? All it does is voice chat, right? LotRO already has voice chat. XFire also already has voice chat (though I have never used that feature myself) To use Ventrillo, I'd have to keep tabbing out of the game, which is something I don't need to do with either LotRO's voice chat feature, or XFire's voice chat feature. To be blunt, I am not installing a single tasker for voice chat. Heck, I've even stopped running MSN once XFire supported it.
Eh, why'd I make this post? Eh, not really sure. Just figured I'd say something about it.

Vent's quality is so much better than the built in voice server. And you don't have to leave the game to use it, you just program a separate hotkey from what you use for LotRO's voice chat or disable in-game entirely. Vent is nice for chatting too with online buddies who may not be logged into the game at the time. I had a server ages ago that I used to keep up with some college friends I both did and didn't game with. Hope this helps a little.

like Cea says: Vent's quality is *significantly* better than LotR-O's, as well as phenomenally more workable/adjustable- allowing you to adjust settings for individual people even (something that would be handy for someone hard of hearing- being able to selectively turn up the volumes of only the people you can't hear so well specifically). Vent's process performance, UNLIKE LotR-O's in-game chat, does NOT affect your game performance- lagging you out and such when a lot of people are on it... therefore, when in a group using Vent, you can turn off your in-game chat and thereby increase your game's performance! Also like Cea said Vent does NOT require you to tab out to use it- aside from initial starting up and logging onto a server/room- which you can do before logging into the game even, thereby negating the necessity to even tab out in that regard! There is a setting for setting your own desired hotkey for ' Use Push to Talk Key' (I have in-game set for G and Vent for B), as well, there is an "overlay" feature that you can turn on that allows you to have small rectangle overlay over your game screen that you can choose where it goes (even manually dragging it around), that lets you see what's going on when people sign in and out etc, without needing to tab out! In short, people bring up Vent a lot because it has so many significant advantages as to why one would want to use it over the in-game voice chat! And for a dual logger like myself, there is also the advantage of being able to run your vent on a completely seperate computer if you so desire

Any reason for not using XFire? for me personally, the only reason would simply be that i do not know the program and have no experience- i already am fairly familiar with Ventrillo and praise it's abilities and uses (as, I'm sure, my previous post shows lol) for me to be able to give any valid reasons not to use xfire in a like manner as Ventrillo, i'd first have to test the program and such and take some time to learn it... something i wouldnt mind doing, with the simple exception that i just don't have much playtime right now like i used, and even when i DO have that playtime, i dont often feel like even playing LotR-O much lately... which is not to say i've lost love for the game, as that is not the case. mostly, for me, it's a matter of energy- something i am lacking a lot of right now, as well as budgeting- i've gone and closed my hunter's/bot's acct for now... and with all the way i LIKE to play, i just don't have much time and energy for that to be able to muchly enjoy it lately.

Simply put, XFire is a full fledged messenger program built specifically for gamers. It has a messenger system that can even hook into MSN, AIM and even Twitter. It has a voice chat system. It lets you take and share screen shots and videos, even allowing the live broadcasting of video. It has file sharing features. It has a chat room system. It has a community system with news, calender, forums, and member ranks. It even has a web browser system. And this can all be accessed from within any game without having to tab out. You just simply hit a single hotkey to pop up the XFire interface over the top of what ever game you are playing at the time, and is fully mouseable. It has various customizable UI elements that can always be on top of your game, including the message window and a rather handy clock, which can be re-sized, moved and have it's transparency set individually for each game. For games like NWN, it has a server browser with favorites, allowing you to directly launch into the server you select. If a friend is on a server for a game that supports the direct launch feature, you can simply press a button to directly enter what ever server they are currently on. I'd like to suggest we set up a group for Lond Treneri, it would make getting together online very much easiler. You can see what games people in your friend list are currently playing.

LT has a group? Maybe? Or maybe it's first incarnation does. I can't recall. I don't use Xfire because it lags me out so badly.
